When Gloria Bouren joined her first club - the Clifton Progress Association - more than five decades ago she did it to keep boredom at bay.
In 1946 when her late husband Jack was discharged from the Navy the Bourens moved from Brisbane to Clifton.
With her husband ``out on the town" with his mates Mrs Bouren was determined not to be left at home.
``When we first came here everyone said `You're Jack's wife,' she said.
``So I got involved in different things. After a while it became `You're Gloria's husband' ... I got more out (of the clubs) than I ever put in."
Mrs Bouren, 74, will receive an OAM today for involvement in groups including Scarborough Wombarra Women's Bowling Club, Coledale Hospital Auxiliary, Clifton Progress Association, Clifton School of Arts and Meals on Wheels.
Her prized volunteer work is with the Wollongong Lantern Club raising money for deaf and blind children.
``It is lovely to go to the Deaf and Blind Institute and see the children," she said. ``The children are so rewarding because they are so happy."
