1 TODAY

AFL

HAWTHORN are recent big improvers but I'm tipping that when they get to the Gabba to take on Brisbane Lions they are going to discover they need to improve a whole lot more to become genuine premiership contenders. The Lions would be filthy about going all the way across the country only to lose by a couple of points to Fremantle last weekend and will be out to make the Hawks pay. And, mark my words, they will.

CYCLING

THANK you for all the correspondence I've had during the week praising my criticism of the Tour de France as a less-than-exciting affair. It's great to know I've got some support. Oh, and thanks to the bloke who emailed a message bagging the crap out of me. I take your comments on board, my friend, but I don't think I would be able to jam that bicycle pump where you suggested. It's on again, the daily highlights. Can't wait to see those wheels go around and around and . . .

WRESTLING

THERE are a lot of crazy cats out there who dig this stuff, I know. Why, I don't know but who am I to criticise, especially when I've just served it up to the cycling again. WWE Raw: a bunch of huge blokes who have, of course, never been anywhere near a steroid, being very aggressive towards each other, with no thought that they might be upsetting the kiddies watching.

RUGBY LEAGUE

THE term dead rubber conjures up all sorts of thoughts, doesn't it? In terms of sport it is the final game of, say, a best-of-three series in which one combatant leads 2-0. But there has never been a State of Origin game that didn't mean something and, with NSW leading the series 2-0 over Queensland, they are still going to go out there in Brisbane and bash the hell out of each other. Let's get it on!

GOLF

LADIES and gentlemen, I believe this will be the time Tiger Woods returns to his rightful place accepting the trophy at the end of a major. He's gone four majors without a victory but at his most recent start in a USPGA Tour event he romped in. Now he's ready to win the British Open . Day one .

6 FRIDAY

RUGBY LEAGUE TWO days after the third State of Origin match the big hits keep on coming when the Newcastle Knights host the surprise team of the season, Penrith. This is bound to be a cracking game as the Panthers seek to further expand their reputation with a win over one of the NRL's heavyweights.

RUGBY UNION

ONE for the suits after they return home from an expensive meal or a night at the opera. South Africa versus New Zealand in game two of the Tri Nations series. I wonder if big Pete will try to sneak in. You know, that fat imbecile who emerged from the crowd and barrelled the referee at a South African game last year.
